CHICAGO : A mother and eight children were killed when fire swept through their rural home in the US state of Kentucky early Thursday, officials said. Only two members of the family – the father and an 11-year-old child – managed to escape and they were being treated for serious burns. The fire broke out in the early hours of the morning in a wooden frame house outside the town of Greenville, Kentucky. “When first responders arrived the residence was totally engulfed in flame,” Kentucky State Trooper Stu Recke told WDRB news. “At the present time, it does not look to be suspicious so foul play is not suspected at all,” he said. “But so far as what actually caused the fire it’s too early to tell right now.” Fire crews had recovered the bodies of five of the victims and were searching the charred rubble for the remaining four, he added. ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has given the four-member committee tasked with initiating dialogue with the Taliban an open mandate, said Irfan Siddiqui. Siddiqui, who has been tasked as the coordinator of the committee, told reporters during a news conference that officials from the government and Taliban should refrain from making comments which would harm the dialogue process. He further said that Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif offered to meet the committee on a daily basis for an hour. According to Siddiqui, the prime minister informed the committee about measures taken for establishing peace in the country. Siddiqui urged the Taliban to announce their dialogue committee as soon as possible. “The Taliban should inform us of their committee after the meeting of the Shura so the talks can begin. ISLAMABAD: A special court hearing General (retd) Pervez Musharraf’s treason case has issued a bailable arrest warrant for the former military ruler, directing authorities to produce him before the court on February 7. Announcing the verdict over Musharraf’s medical report, the special court dismissed the former president’s plea seeking permission for medical treatment abroad. The court set bail bond at Rs2.5 million. It said that Musharraf failed to give appropriate justification over his nonappearance in the court. The court directed Islamabad Police Inspector General to ensure the implementation of the verdict. The report stated that Musharraf needed to undergo an angiography on an immediate basis, but the former president had not provided his consent to undergo the life saving surgery in Pakistan and wanted to go abroad for treatment. PESHAWAR: A meeting of Shura Council of banned Tehreek e Taliban Pakistan (TTP) would meet here with their Vice Ameer Shaekh Khalid Haqqani in the chair. TTP's commander told Geo news that the meeting would constitute a committee for holding dialogue with the government. The commander revealed that the committee would be headed by Ameer of Political Shura Qari Shakil. He said that the Shura may demanded of the government for inclusion of Jamat e Islami Chief Munawar Hassan or Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Finance Minister Siraj ul Haq in the four-member committee formed by the government.
ISLAMABAD: Addressed to the Chief Justice of Pakistan, a letter has been dispatched seeking to reopen the Kohistan video case. The letter drafted by human rights activists Frzana Bari and journalist Hasib Khwaja, states that according to the evidence all the five girls shown in the video had been murdered, therefore, the case be reopened. It further says that if the girls are still alive then an order be issued to produce them before the court or in case they have been killed then the culprits be punished under the law. The cell-phone captured video had caught the media attention about one and a half year ago in which a boy is seen dancing in a room and five other girls clapping. ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Mian Nawaz Sharif, while chairing a meeting with the four-member team constituted to hold dialogue with the Taliban, instructed the committee to initiate peace talks on immediate basis, Geo News reported on Friday. According to the sources, the four-member team formed by the government to hold talks with the Taliban met with Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif to mull over the dialogue strategy. The session was attended by all the four members of the committee that include Irfan Siddiqui‚ Rahimullah Yusufzai‚ Rustam Shah Mehmand and Major (retd) Amir. MUZAFFARGARH: A widow was gang raped on the orders of a panchayat at the Dera Din Panah area. The panchayat had ruled that the widow be punished for the alleged affair of her brother with the daughter of one of the accused. Following the panchayat’s ruling, the widow was raped by the girl’s father and two brothers. Upon receiving information of this horrific incident, police arrested six individuals including the head of the panchayat. Several other members of the panchayat managed to flee. Police have started a search operation for the accused and cases have been lodged against them. Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif has taken notice of the incident.
ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court Thursday disposed of the review petition filed by former military ruler General (retd) Pervez Musharraf against the July 31, 2009, verdict denouncing the Nov 3, 2007, proclamation of emergency by him, DawnNews reported. The apex court’s 14-member larger bench, headed by Chief Justice Tassaduq Hussain Jilani, disposed of the petition, citing that the plea was not based on merit and the arguments presented were irrelevant to the case. Earlier during today’s hearing, counsel for Musharraf, Advocate Sharifuddin Pirzada, said unconstitutional steps had been taken several times in the country’s past and the judiciary had allowed these steps on important issues.       ISLAMABAD: The first meeting of a four-member committee constituted to hold talks with the Taliban will met at the Prime Minister House here tomorrow (Friday), the PM’s assistant on national affairs Irfan Siddiqui said. Siddiqui who is also a member of the committee said that Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif would chair the meeting. The meeting would deliberate upon the scope and mandate of the committee, sources said. During his National Assembly address on Wednesday, Prime Minister Sharif said peace should be given another chance as he announced the formation of a four-member committee to carry out the dialogue process with the Taliban. The committee comprises Irfan Siddique (PM’s Advisor on National Affairs), Major (retd) Aamir, Rahimullah Yousafzai (journalist) and Rustam Shah Mohmand (former Ambassador to Afghanistan).
